TextGuru can be used to view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, as well as PDF files in landscape or portrait mode. The UI is not overly complex, although there are a few issues, but the application is feature-rich. What WriteRoom is to simplicity, TextGuru is to complexity. It is also of note that WriteRoom only creates and edits plain text. Perhaps most important is that WriteRoom supports landscape text entry, which any good application that has text entry should. While these methods of exporting your document aren't ideal, and no means will be until Apple releases a syncing API for the iPhone OS, they are simple. Once the sharing feature is initiated, all of your documents are shared with anyone with Bonjour installed on your network (all modern Macs and some PCs), and are not password-protected. You should be aware, however, that if you exit to the home screen on your device and continue to type in your browser, changes will not be saved. Changes made to the document from your computer are automatically saved on the iPhone. From there, you can interact with the application just as you would through your phone, but in Safari. There you are greeted with an iPhone, not unlike the iPhone Simulator, with the same UI as the iPhone application. You then go to bookmarks in Safari on your desktop (PC users need to install Bonjour for Windows) and select WriteRoom Documents. The second way to share your documents is through Bonjour file-sharing, which is activated by pressing a button in the document selection screen. When the functionality is selected, the Mail app opens up, and the body of your text is placed in the e-mail. The first is the built-in functionality of e-mailing the contents of your document using your phone's e-mail client. The application has two means by which to do this. While this may not seem like much, you need to ask yourself, "What else do I need from a text editor on a phone?"Īn important aspect of any text editing application is the ability to get the notes off your phone and onto your primary computer. Again, going with the theme of simplicity, the preferences allow only for the user to set text color, background color, scroller color, font, and font size. The application settings are located outside of the application within the iPhone's settings. Where many developers might add buttons upon buttons for countless features, the author succeeded in keeping the application simple and intuitive. This means that regardless of when you hit the Home button, when you go back to writing, the last thing you wrote will still be there. There is no need to manually save documents in WriteRoom for iPhone, as the application auto-saves. The application consists of two screens: one to select the document you wish to work on, create a new document, or turn file-sharing on and the document editing screen where you enter text. I'm happy to say that the application delivers just that. If you are familiar with WriteRoom for the Mac, you already know what to expect out of the iPhone counterpart: simplicity, barebones functionality, and no distractions. WriteRoom from Hogs Bay Software meets most of my needs. There aren't really that many features that I require in a text editor, and there are even fewer I require in a text editor for my phone. What a few of us do have is an iPhone/iPod touch, so we decided to take a look at the text editors available for the devices that might help us in a pinch. We here at the Orbiting HQ do quite a bit of writing, and we don't always have a computer at hand.
